ART@WORK PRESENTS ENEMIGO PROVISIONAL. Exhibition of Works by Miami Artist Ernesto Oroza
On View July 9 - August 31, 2011
Opening Reception: Saturday, July 16, 2011
Ernesto Oroza, a native of Cuba, is an interdisciplinary artist and designer whose work focuses on conceptual design and architecture. He is interested in productive processes articulated in precarious contexts of severe contingency. His investigation methods, as well as his objects and spaces are contaminated by -and take advantage of- the cleverness, productive tactical and economic logical of the subject matter that he is looking into.
In reference to this exhibition, the artist writes: "Shooting galleries in Cuba are spaces traversed by a nihilistic ray. These are sectors of the city--and of the material culture of the island--in which destruction occurs at an accelerated pace. They are the dispersed centers from where the void radiates. Six years ago, I made a video titled Provisional Enemy. During the first seconds of the video, one reads: “On Tuesday, 26th of February, 2004, the person in charge of a shooting gallery agreed to sell me his work resources: a wire full of hanging objects that have been shot at by dozens of Cubans each day with a pellet gun.” A version of my video, photos from the archives of "Enemigo Provisional", and videos of Fidel Castro promoting household goods from Communist China in Cuban national television constitute my exhibition Enemigo Provisional at Art@Work."
Oroza holds a B.A. in Industrial Design from the Higher Institute of Design (Havana) and a Certificate in Graphic Design from the Polytechnic Institute of Design (Havana). He was visiting professor in Les Ateliers, Ecole Nationale Superieure de Creation Industrielle in Paris (1998, 2006 2010), and professor of the Polytechnic Institute of Design of Havana from 1995 to 2000. Oroza received a Harpo Foundation Grants 2010, a Cintas Fellowship in 2008 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007.
Ernesto Oroza's work has been exhibited in museums, galleries and cultural spaces such as Haute Definition Gallery, Paris, France, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal, Canada, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY, Laboral Centro de Art, Gijon, Spain, and the Groninger Museum, The Netherlands, Miami Art Museum, Miami, FL.
